Life Groups

Life Groups are a vital part of our ministry at CPC.  We believe that Life Groups are a place where people can experience authentic community, personal transformation and develop lasting relationships.  Life Groups are available to people at all stages of life.  If you would like to join a Life Group, please contact Pastor Kevin McDonald at 402-498-9000 or kevin@cpcomaha.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

Small Group Reflections

by Curt Wegley

I walked into the church … its nice … a pretty big place … warm and inviting. “But how would we ever get to know anybody in this big place?” I thought. People greeted us. They seemed nice. We were given the literature for visitors. Reading through the church bulletin, I came across an advertisement for “Life Groups” — Covenant Presbyterian’s answer to small groups. I called the number. We were put into contact with Steve and Marcene Johnson, then my wife and I made our way to their house one rainy fall night.

If we hadn’t made that call, if we hadn’t gone to that group … we might not have progressed to the point of membership at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Life Groups are an essential part of the development of a healthy church body. They are the lifeblood of the church. These small groups of individuals meet together for fellowship, Bible study, accountability and support.  It is in this group that we pray for each other, for the Stephen Ministry that Marcene is involved in, for the Jail Ministry that is such a part of Wilma’s life. We pray for the couple that left us and moved to California. We share our stories of how God is working in our lives and answering our prayers. In this humble little group we see the sermons preached on Sunday coming to life in the lives of each other. We see the abstract made real. The theory turned into practice. This is the power of small groups. As Paul so eloquently put it in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”

If you are interested in being a part of one of these groups fill out an orange card located at the Information Center, give it to Pastor Kevin or Curt Wegley and we will match you with a group by the end of the week. In addition to finding people a group, the church is seeking to develop a small group leadership team. If you are interested in being a part of the team, contact Pastor Kevin by email at kevin@cpcomaha.org or Curt Wegley at wegs@me.com.

How to Begin a Life Group

Kevin McDonald, Associate Pastor

Please contact our Small Group Leadership Team to include myself kevin@cpcomaha.org or call 498-9000 ext. 25, Curt Wegley, or Beth Wooster (we are recruiting more members for CPC’s Small Group Leadership Team currently). Here are five basic steps that will help you in forming a new Life Group:

  • Make a list of 6-12 people to invite.
  • Contact the people you have identified and ask them to prayerfully consider joining you for an initial Life Group introductory meeting. Serve refreshments and a get to know each other conversational time. Then ask each person about their interest in forming an ongoing Life Group.
  • Contact the Small Group Leadership Team for a check in to register your Life Group and the team will recommend Small Group materials for study with up to date curriculum.
  • Form a Group Covenant. The Small Group Leadership Team can provide you with a Covenant. This is your agreement about how you will systematically put your group together and what your expectations are for each member of the Life Group.
  • Select the contact person for the group who will send the list of names who are in the Life Groups so the Small Group Leadership Team can support your group.

Jesus modeled Life Groups and the small group ministry in His own life. Jesus said,

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am among them . . .  Jesus . . .  (Matthew 18:20).
